All hikes are appropriate for anyone 10 and older with their families. Some hikes are specifically intended for younger children, and those are noted on the calendar. Just show up at the designated meeting point at the start time with water and bug repellant to get going. Be sure to wear long pants to deter ticks. There is no need to register, but be aware that hikes will be cancelled for steady rain. If there are only occasional showers, the hike will go on. Many hikes and events are open to those who call Millburn-Short Hills home. Come for the Beaver Moon Night Hike on Friday, November 3rd, 2017 from 7 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. Be sure to bring your flashlight for this moderate hike to Washington Rock to see the new shelter. This hike is for those ages 15 and above and will meet at Dog Park off of Crest Drive. The next opportunity for a hike comes Saturday, November 4th from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Meet at the Mayapple Hill parking lot at 9:45 a.m. for this 4 to 5 mile hike that will be a good workout.
In addition to hikes there are other events and opportunities to help out South Mountain Reservation. The first Sunday of each month is normally set aside for trail work. Come out on Sunday, November 4th from 9 a.m. til noon to assist in making a connector trail between the Rahway Trail and the Elmdale Trail. Those 15 and older are invited to bring gloves, wear sturdy shoes, and prepare to work hard to improve this area for all visitors.
