A Hard Day and A Good Day at My Chatham NJ Home

October 30, 2012 by rbenjamin Leave a Comment

Today was a good day.

A day to witness miracles and a testament to the strength of our communities.

Leaving my Chatham NJ home to visit and see family and friends alive and well and standing next to their Millburn/Short Hills homes (many of which were still standing) was amazing. Visiting the Millburn Deli brought a tear to my eye as I watched them remove the boards from windows, a sign that things were going to be okay. Many of you can remember when that wasn’t the case.

Preparing for disaster in Millburn NJ, near my Chatham home

Yes, there was devastation in our community yesterday.

Yes, it will take time (many months, likely) to recover and rebuild.

Yes, it was a hard day.

But, it was still good.

And I will sleep well tonight knowing that my friends, family, pets and loved ones and their homes in Summit, Millburn/Short Hills, and Chatham are still here. We will continue to draw strength from one another and make each day good until one day everything will be great in our small communities again.

Devastation hits near my Chatham NJ home

You see, we as a community are resilient. Our towns have weathered major storms, like Hurricane Irene and last years ice storm on Halloween and now Hurricane Sandy, and have bounced back. In fact, we are already bouncing – Halloween has been re-scheduled to Monday in many of our towns so that we can embrace our neighborly spirit despite the tragedy that has occurred. I am excited to have a chance to have trick or treaters visit my Chatham NJ home this week and recount the blessings of having children who are able to dress up and walk through our community.

Please join me in embracing the challenges that lie ahead – the challenges that will try our patience and resolve and may at times seem insurmountable.

Devastation hits near my Chatham NJ home
Together as a community, whether you live in Summit NJ or have a home in Millburn/Short Hills, Chatham, or another of the affected areas, we need be strong, patient and move forward.  We have no choice.

October 17, 2012 by rbenjamin 1 Comment

Walk you dog and search for homes in MillburnAs the weather cools near New Jersey homes with the introduction of Fall, pet owners and their four-legged friends may find themselves trying to eek out the last rays of sunshine.  Once the opportunity of running through the park and jumping in the many leaves or maybe taking longer walks now that it’s not quite so hot out passes,  it may be harder to entertain your pet.

In case you are are wondering what you are going to do for activity with your “best friend,” I wanted to clue you in to some “pet-friendly” establishments.  Finding a place for you and your dog to watch the world go by can be almost as challenging as trying to search for homes in Millburn without an expert like me.  😉

So, while this list is short, it gives you a few places to visit that will have you and your pooch enjoying the sunshine near your Millburn/Short Hills home.

  • Millburn Deli
  • Bagel Chateaux
  • Starbucks

If you’re willing to chance the elements, the following outdoor trails are always worth exploring, too, if the weather is warm enough.

  • South Mountain Reservation
  • Essex County South Mountain Dog Park

Freedom Rings For Those Living in Short Hills and Millburn

July 2, 2012 by rbenjamin 1 Comment

Looking for a wonderfully patriotic way to celebrate your Independence Day? Look no further! Near your Millburn-Short Hills home, the festivities are fast approaching, and promise a holiday weekend worthy of celebrating our great nation’s birthday. Come join in the fun of living in Short Hills and Millburn with a weekend full of family, friends, and fun!

You can start your July Fourth bright and early with a touching flag raising ceremony Taylor Park at 9 a.m. It will be followed by the presentation of the Patriot Award presentation, where Millburn-Short Hills Girl Scouts will receive honors for their years of patriotism and service to our ever-grateful community of Millburn-Short Hills.

At 9:30, suit up your bikes and prepare for the infamous trike/bike/stroller parade and the girls’ All Star softball game at 10 a.m. To keep the celebration family-fun and hopping, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Taylor Park, will be transformed into a patriotic festival for the whole family featuring children’s rides, games, ponies, and a Revolutionary War encampment reenacted by the Morgan Rifles in a show that captures the true spirit of living in Short Hills!

7 p.m. is when the party moves closer to Millburn homes, at Millburn High School where you’ll be met with patriotic music performed by Krazy Kat and an expanded schedule of Family Field Games. As a finale, for everyone’s favorite end to their Independence Day (except for maybe your pets)… there will be plenty of FIREWORKS cascading above your Millburn-Short Hills home!

Tickets to this patriotic community event can be purchased before July Fourth at a reduced price of $10, or $12 the day of the festivities. Tickets for the fireworks are separate and cost $5. You can find your tickets at a number of local merchants, including Millburn Deli, Futter’s Shoes, and Anthony Laurence Jewelers, which are all near your Millburn home. They can also be purchased at the town haIl or at the gate. In the event of a rain check, the celebration will take place on July 5th.

Join Millburn-Short Hills this July Fourth to celebrate your liberty and Independence and have a Happy Independence Day wherever you are. I am grateful everyday for the freedoms that allow me and you to have a home in Short Hills and Millburn and live in the U.S.A!
