Millburn Tennis = Tennis Heaven

May 22, 2015 by rbenjamin Leave a Comment

MTO_Tennis_BallMillburn tennis isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of life. And this isn’t just because the Millburn High School boys’ tennis team has won the last three NJ Tournament of Champions titles, and just beat Princeton 5-0 in the Group III NJ State Championship (we’re not at all bragging here, guys). It’s because of the tremendous Millburn tennis community here. There are the beautiful and well-kept public courts at Taylor Park, the competitive yet supportive leagues at Center Court in Chatham, and the West Orange Tennis Club.

Listen, Millburn tennis isn’t just about winning (though clearly we are great at that). It’s about building community, and getting to know your neighbors. Parents, there are so many opportunities, such as the Chatham Tennis Camps, to get your children involved and make friends with other kids. There are so many ways for adults to take a break from their work and enjoy the beautiful sunshine over some doubles or round robin singles. Millburn tennis brings people together.

Brooklynites: really, what are you doing sitting there with your racket in your hand, waiting for those people who just won’t get off your court at Prospect Park or in Central Park, sometimes after you’ve reserved the court weeks in advance? Let’s face it: Brooklyn is no place to be a tennis player. Do yourself a favor. Get your racket and your tennis bag, a fresh can of Wilson balls, and come over to our courts (conveniently located right near a beautiful Millburn home). It’s Millburn tennis: we’ll have a court ready for you when you get here.

UPDATE- Millburn Boys tennis wins forth straight NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title win over Livingston.

Millburn High School: Smart and Sporty

Millburn High School

Millburn High School

A recent article in The Patch said that Millburn High School was “challenging”, and thank God. Facts: a challenging high school has challenging classes like: Funny Business: Humor and Satire in Literature and Film, AP Economics, Business Law, and Astrophysics, which push your children to learn more, do more, grow more. A challenging high school has challenging teachers who went to schools like Columbia, Harvard, and Yale, who motivate and inspire your child, but also instill in them their experience of high achievement, which prepares your child for the future. A challenging institution like Millburn High School routinely produces students who achieve high scores on AP exams, go on to prestigious universities, and who win robotics competitions. All the while having every major sport from football, baseball and wrestling, to tennis, golf, lacrosse, and fencing (because smart and sporty is a nasty combination).

Wait a second, Astrophysics and Business Law? Can we stop and remember that this is a public high school? As in, free. As in, your child gets a top-notch education just because you live in the town (makes buying a Millburn home seem like a good idea, eh?)? Another fact: U.S News and World Report ranked Millburn High School the fourth best in New Jersey and 2015 NICHE rankings just released The Best High School Teachers in New York City Metro Area and Millburn High School received a overall grade of A+ ranking in the TOP 3.

The bottom line is this: you put your kid in Millburn High School and the expansiveness of the curriculum will get the best out of them, nurture them, support them, all the while allowing them to make mistakes and learn things about themselves. Putting your kid in Millburn High School will pave the way for a bright future. Now, how is that a bad thing?

October 26, 2012 by rbenjamin 1 Comment

candy & home search in ChathamLast year’s Halloween was delayed due to snow and if you’ve been watching the news, you are aware that this year’s trick-or-treating requires extra caution from parents, as well. Several New Jersey towns are instituting curfews of 8 p.m. this year and even more are just encouraging parents to accompany their children in their quest for treats on October 31st. If you and your family plan on conducting a door-to-door candy home search in Chatham, you should also know about a way to profit from your adventure, quite literally!

Families who live in Chatham NJ can visit local dentist, Dr. Atanase of Advanced Dentistry, LLC to cash in and receive $1 per pound of candy on November 2nd, from 3 to 5 p.m. These special treats will then be collected and shipped to Operation Gratitude Program for our troops serving away from home. Children can also bring or make a card to send when they make their exchange. The dental office is located at 33 Main Street, Suite 101, in Chatham NJ.

If you live in ShortHills/Millburn NJ and are conducting your trick or treat search in Millburn home areas, you’ll find Dr. Richard C. Schonberg offering the same exchange rate for candy and a chance to win a new iPod Touch for participating. His dental office is located at 225 Millburn Avenue, Suite. 205, nearby your Millburn home.

Live in Millburn & See Academic Excellence

August 8, 2012 by rbenjamin 1 Comment

Live in Millburn & enjoy a great education. It’s almost time for school to start again and students who live in Millburn are hard at work preparing for the new academic year. Summer schedules turn into school planners, swimsuits are transferred to the back of the closet, and vacationers are saying their goodbyes, wishing they had just a little more time to have that summer fun everyone sings about. But as bitter as some may be, others are just as happy for fall and the challenge the new year will present!

Students who live in Millburn have long been known for their academic excellence, and our college acceptance rates show it! The Millburn High School recently released a list showcasing the many colleges who will be welcoming local students as they leave their Millburn home this fall! The list was featured in the Millburn Patch and you can view it here, although you no doubt have already heard about many individual success stories in local conversation throughout Millburn, whether it be proud teachers and parents meeting in the bank or nail salon or the ecstatic soon-to-be students.

From Yale to Vanderbilt to Texas A & M and Brown, Millburn’s class of 2012 is ready to start fresh, bringing a little bit of Millburn and our small town values along with them. Will we see promise in these thousands of Millburn students, waving goodbye to their hometown and heading to wherever their imaginations take them? No doubt about it – when it comes to education, caps are off to students who call Millburn home.

Millburn Home to Scrabble Club

July 17, 2012 by rbenjamin Leave a Comment

Millburn - home to Scrabble ClubDuring the summer, we all have a tendency to relax and be a little more carefree. Enjoyment near your Millburn home comes from outdoor activities – bike rides, beach days, and baseball games. Often we find ourselves forgetting about being honest to goodness productive because, let’s face it, it’s vacation! But time passes quickly, and soon enough you and your children who live in Millburn will be back at that school desk or work cubicle, focused on preparing reports and spell-checking documents, with your somewhat tanner hands (thank you, summer vacation). Before that happens, it’s time to seize the moment and do something different, as summer is the season to be spontaneous! You can read a new book, get started on some poetry, write a short story!

Or maybe play some Scrabble near your Millburn home?

That’s right, for that competitive person bored out of their mind, the eldery women next door who just so happened to ace her spelling bee in primary school, or anyone really (open to all ages and skill levels), the Millburn Scrabble Club is now open and ready for you! The Millburn Scrabble Club formed in 1991 and meets every Monday at 6:45 p.m. for games and tournaments at the Millburn Public Library. Meeting year-round, even on holidays when the library is closed, the club is chock-full of local resident looking for some board game fun! The alternate holiday meeting location is at the Barnes and Noble on Rt22 on Springfield at 7 p.m. The cost for every meeting is only one dollar, and comes with so much more than just a game of scrabble. Go meet some new friends, broaden your spelling skills, and get in some healthy competition! You just might decide you love words!
