Families living on Millburn-Short Hills real estate have a great opportunity to experience nature. The South Mountain Conservancy is hosting its 2017 SMR Family Campout. This is the fourth year of the event, and last year’s campout won Special Event Programming award from the NJ Recreation and Park Association. The campout is geared toward families with younger children, especially ages four to 12. Mark the calendar for Saturday and Sunday, October 7th and 8th for a low-stress campout with other families from Millburn-Short Hills homes.
The events begin on Saturday the 7th at noon. This is the welcome and registration time, as well as the time to claim a spot and set up your tent. There will be activities from 2 to 5 p.m. Multiple activities will be available. Go on a nature hike or a bug walk. Get up close with some of the animals at Turtle Back Zoo. Take a tour of the Wildflower and Forest Preserve, then see the art in the Sculpture Park. Kids who bring bikes or scooters can ride up to Crest Drive. Get creative with art and nature projects, too.

Naturalist David Alexander will direct activities until 8:15 p.m. At that point, the Good Tymes String Band will begin to play, and everyone can get involved in other campfire activities. The day’s activities end at 10 p.m.
On Sunday, a light breakfast of bagels, juice, and coffee will be provided to campers by the Conservancy. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 8:45 a.m. Greet the day with tranquility at the Morning Yoga class, from 7:30 to 8:15. More activities, including a scavenger hunt and hikes will run from 8:45 to 10:45. The group will practice good camping habits by cleaning up the area, then striking camp.
